Neighbourhoods

Estate walks, town-centre hours, and the shop that closes at three

We date our visits. We say when a stall was shut. Neighbourhood copy is built from streets we actually walked, not from a single aerial photograph of the island.

How a precinct actually sounds at 14:00

A town centre at lunch is not the same place at 16:00. We return after the office crowd leaves to see which clinics still have a queue, which wet-market stalls have packed ice, and which void-deck tables are used by residents rather than leftover lunch trays. That second visit is often the story.

We write about school-gate congestion, evening sports courts, and the small repairs that change how a block feels: a new ramp, a closed playground, a relocated recycling point. If a notice is taped to a lift, we photograph the notice (not residents’ doors) and we check the scheme name against published housing or town-council material. Related housing explainers sit on Housing.

Chinatown, where our Amoy Street newsroom sits, is one precinct among many. We do not treat the downtown shophouse row as a stand-in for Tampines, Jurong, or Punggol. When we travel east or west, the file names the planning area and the nearest station.

Parks and connectors

Park connectors show up in this beat when lighting, crowding, or a closed stretch changes who uses the path after dark. We walk a segment and we note the time.

Shop rows and drainage

A flooded five-foot way is a neighbourhood story. We describe what we saw and we ask the agency named on the drain marker for an on-the-record note.

Stalls that stay open after three

The second visit is often the story: which coffee stalls, clinics, and wet-market tables are still working when the office crowd has left.
